What is Henna?

Henna is a plant that grows in India, the Middle East & North Africa. The leaves of the plant are crushed & ground into a fine powder. Once the leaves are in powder form, it is mixed with lemon juice, sugar & essential oils.

Ebony London uses two types of henna:

Organic Henna: made with Henna Powder, Sugar, Essential Oil and water.

Jagua Henna: made with Henna Powder, sugar, essential oils and Jagua juice. Jagua henna leave a blueish black/maroon stain with proper care.  Jagua juice is an extract of the fruit Genipa americana. Geneva americana grows in rainforests and is a species of Genipa, native to northern South America, the Caribbean and southern Mexico.

How does Henna work?

Henna dyes the upper layers of skin. (epidermis)
Placing henna paste on the skin stains the upper layers. After leaving the paste on the skin between 4 to 12 hours it is scraped off & an orange stain is revealed. Over the next 48 - 72 hours the stain darkens from orange to a rich brown. Henna lasts between 1 to 3 weeks on the skin. It slowly fades as your skin exfoliates.

White & Black Henna

Although stunning in appearance, white henna & black henna are chemical based stains & can cause chemical burns. Ebony London does not offer white & black Henna tattooing.

Natural Henna for Darker Skin Tones

Ways to darken henna stains:

  • Leave the henna paste on your skin up to 16 hours.
  • Once the paste is dry, dab a lemon sugar mixture upon the design.
  • Once the paste is dry, gently pick off the henna paste, or rub it off with a paper towel. Never wash it off or you will halt the staining process. It should be a bright orange color when you pick it off
  • Avoid water for an additional 12-24 hours. If this is not possible, generously oil your design with coconut oil, shea butter, or any other greasy vegetable-based oil.  You will see your design start to darken as it oxidizes throughout the day. Henna requires about 24 - 48 hours to reach its darkest point. The stain will always be darkest on the palms, where the thicker skin can absorb more henna, and lighter toward the thin skin of the wrists and arms for a beautiful ombré effect.
